Greedy bastards

Just this weekend, S and I discovered the trails at Middlesex Fells and had a great time. The trails were well marked and well-traveled by friendly mountain bikers, hikers and runners. It was so inspiring to be out there enjoying the beauty of the forest and ponds and to see that everyone we encountered on the trails were just as happy and at peace just as we were. We rode our bikes until our legs could no longer turn the pedals and then headed home completely satiated with our day. Beautiful weather, hard riding, and the resulting euphoria made the rest of our weekend seem like we were floating on air. This morning, I went online to join the Friends of the Fells and was confounded by the news that I found there regarding development in the neighborhood surrounding the park. Apparently the city of Stoneham is reviewing a Development Proposal from a real estate developer who wants to build a more than one million square foot development on the site of the former Hospital that will include over 450 housing units plus 250,000 sq. ft of office space. What I find interesting is that the company is trying to persuade the city that they will not hurt that the development will not impact the reservation environmentally. Common sense suggests otherwise when you factor in the increase in traffic from 1,660 to 8,660 vehicle trips every day. This of course, endorses my choice to go to law school and fight the system and big business. Greedy bastards! When will we stop? When there's not a single tree or wild animal on the planet and every square inch of our country looks like NYC?
