There's no such thing as a bad day on the bike but today wasn't a "good" day. Notice I didn't say bad, it just wasn't good. This morning the temperatures had dropped and it was a chilly New England morning requiring layers and gloves. It's still September!! Anyway, I bundled up - jeans, l/s shirt, sweater, and fleece vest. I pedaled a little faster to get my HR rate between stoplights. Unfortunately the Boston streets are a little "bumpy" with potholes, bumps in the pavement, trolley tracks, manhole covers and other hazardous obstacles which of course are not friendly to my beloved Fuji who has those bastardy skinny tires. So far, I've made my daily commute without a mishap. Today was different. Today, I hit a bump and my book bag FLEW OFF. Yeah. Thankfully I was on the bike path and the bag didn't hit the cyclist behind me. Whew! That was on my way TO school.
On my way FROM school, I had yet another mishap, much more disconcerting than the first. I was pedaling home fast around 2:30 to avoid the school traffic - it gets CRAZEEEEE between 3-6pm. You do NOT want to be on the road. I was on the home stretch and was turning left from the right hand lane onto my street. As I was crossing over, my tire went right into the trolley track and I went down. THANKFULLY, the car behind me was far enough back that they saw me go down and stopped and a pedestrian came out to help me get out of the street ensuring that traffic remained stopped and that I was okay. Thanks to those two, I walked away with a scrape and bruises. From now on, I'll be utilizing those crosswalks to cross the street instead of riding along the track and trying to cross over. Or maybe I could get some fatter tires?? FA-REAKY!
