We're making pies

Ahhh, a perfect morning doing a little shopping for apples, butternut squash, coffee and tomatoes at our favorite farmer's market. The sun is shining, the air is crisp, and everyone is in the holiday spirit. We especially stopped by the market today for these lovely apples which will become heavenly apple pies for family (and Santa) this Christmas. My husband takes great pride in his apple pie. He learned the recipe from his mom who learned it from her mom and so on. His mother and his grandmother are from Alabama and they take "crust" very seriously. It must be handmade with good ole Crisco and butter. Sinfully delicious and hell on the hips - just the way I like it! Last Christmas was a real treat because we spent it in New England and my husband and his mother prepared a wonderful blueberry pie with Maine blueberries. We also had Sea Dog Blueberry Ale with fresh blueberries floating on top. This year, we'll celebrate with my family and use these local apples and toast in the New Year with some hot apple cider with a littl nip of brandy for good measure. Cheers.
